Why are there 7 continents but only 5 oceans? I'm so confused!

I was drawing the world map for my CSEC prep and got stuck. Why do we say there are 7 continents but only 5 oceans? My teacher said it's not about size, but I still don't get it. Also, where does Trinidad fit in all this?

Big lands = continents (7). Big waters = oceans (5). Simple! Like how we have 12 months but 4 seasons. But why 7 lands? Some places like Europe and Asia are joined but counted separate. Weird, right?

@JokerMarlon student ·

Because God ran out of names after 7 continents and only had 5 left for oceans! Wait... that doesn't make sense. 😂

Great question! It's all about how geographers GROUP land and water. Continents are big chunks of land separated by oceans. We count 7 because Europe and Asia are separate even though they're connected. Oceans are the huge water bodies between continents. We count 5 because the Southern Ocean is now widely accepted as the fifth. Trinidad? You're in the Caribbean Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, smack in the Americas continent!

So if Europe and Asia are connected, why not count them as one? My brother said it's because of history and culture, not science. Is that true?

But what about Zealandia? I read it's a new continent under New Zealand. Does that change the count to 8?

I'm still confused about the Southern Ocean. Is it really an ocean or just part of the others?

@KevExpert expert ·
@ProfNdiaye

The Southern Ocean is defined by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, not just location. It's the water that circles Antarctica. Some older maps don't show it, but modern geography includes it as the fifth ocean since 2000.

Where exactly is Trinidad in all this? Is it on its own continent or part of South America?

@DwayneJoke student ·
@AnikaCAPE

Trinidad is on the 'Continent of Chutney' obviously! 🌶️🎶

@ProfNdiaye

Key takeaway: Continents are about land grouping, oceans about water circulation. The numbers are agreed by geographers worldwide so maps match. Think of it like how we all agree a TT dollar is $1.35 in US money!

So islands like Tobago aren't continents? But they're land too!

@NicoleHelper student ·
@JasonBeginner

Exactly! Islands are part of continents. Tobago is part of the same continent as Trinidad - North America. Big islands like Greenland are part of Europe. Size doesn't matter for continents!

@NicoleHelper

Like how we say Trinidad is in the Caribbean, but it's really part of North America on the map. The Caribbean Sea is just the blue water around us!

@PriyaTeacher

Remember: 7 continents are land groups, 5 oceans are water divisions. The Southern Ocean is the icy water around Antarctica. Trinidad sits in the Atlantic Ocean, part of the North American continent. Now go draw that map with confidence!
